Gerald Wilfred Shaw passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Thursday, May 29, 2014 at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Wilfred and Annie (Dicks) Shaw.
Gerald owned and operated Shaw Wholesale Fish until a few years ago when he passed the business on to his son. He still went to work every day until he was hospitalized recently. He was an avid outdoorsman spending many hours over the years hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and spending time at his summer homes, first in Loch Lomond and then in Margaree.
Gerald is survived by his loving children, Darlene Murphy, Howie Centre, Jeri (Reggie) MacNeil, Glace Bay, Grant (Maria), Dominion and Krista (Shane) Gallant, Glace Bay; he leaves behind eight grandchildren, Breton (Mary Jane) Murphy, who was like a son to him, Bobby-Jean Murphy, Geralyn Murphy (Aaron Brown), Travis MacDonald, Jami (Andy) Murphy, Justin Shaw (Ashley O’Day), Kyle Shaw, Katherine Shaw; he also leaves behind six great-grandchildren, Hannah, Ryan, James, Katie, Brycen and Kyren (all Murphy’s). He will also be missed by brothers, Melvin (Myrna), Wilfred (Shirley); sisters, Theresa Pink, Jeannette (Eric) Murrin, Helen (Harold) Sheaves. Gerald also leaves behind his companion, Norma LeBlanc.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife, Jean in 1992; brothers, Fabe, Richard, Tom and sisters, Marie Hynes and Loretta Webber
Visitation for Gerald will be held Sunday, June 1, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service officiated by Ian McCulloch and Mark Hatt will be celebrated, 11 a.m. Monday, June 2 in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
