Petronella 'Nellie' Brewer

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, Petronella 'Nellie' Brewer, 84, formerly of Brook Street, North Sydney, on Friday June 6, 2014, at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Born in Holland, she was the daughter of the late Willem and Helena (Van Ryn) Moonen.
Nellie was a proud warbride, marrying her husband Ariel and immigrating to Canada in 1946, following the Second World War and together they would raise 14 children.
Nellie was happiest when her house was full, being surrounded by her family and enjoying all types of music, especially Daniel O’Donnell.
She was an active member of St. Joseph parish in North Sydney, as a long-time member of the senior choir and a forty year member of the CWL. She was a former member of Branch #19 Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary and current president of the resident council of Cara House, at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Nellie is survived by her loving children, Linda (Bob) O’Quinn, Goose Cove, Victoria County, Lloyd Brewer, Dartmouth, Brenda (Dave) Lewis, Topsail, N.L., Pat (Gordon) Giacomin, Halifax, John (Madelene) Brewer, Howie Centre, Greg (Kim) Brewer, Nelson, B.C., Chris Brewer (Betty), Kirk (Freda) Brewer, Brendon (Verna) Brewer, Glenda (Gordon) Johnston, Pete (Anna) Brewer, Wayne (Terri) Brewer, Wanda Brewer, Kim (Dave) Dooley, all of North Sydney; by her 29 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her sisters, Yopie and Boefie as well as several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is Nellie’s close friend and confidant, Olga Brewer of North Sydney.
Nellie was predeceased by her husband John Ariel Brewer, her daughter-in-law Annie Brewer; six brothers, four sisters and a great-grandson, Jack Brewer.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home and, in particular, Cara House for providing a loving and caring home in which she thoroughly enjoyed her final years.
Visitation for Nellie will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be sent to the Northside Community Guest Home Foundation, ”Cara House”, or St. Joseph Church Improvement Fund.
