It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Albert 'Bert' Ivey on Monday, June 16, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines on January 1, 1938, Bert was the son of the late George G. and Elizabeth (Costello) Ivey.
He served in the Canadian Armed Forces, 1st. RCHA from 1956 to 1959. He also served in Canada and Germany with NATO. Bert was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 08, Sydney Mines.
He returned to Cape Breton with his family in the mid-1970s from Boston, Mass., and went on to be a well known successful car salesman. He was also well known in the community for his great sense of humour and his love to sing and entertain. He always had a story or a joke to share. He was the life of any party. Bert was an avid Montreal Canadiens fan, and he loved all sports and darts.
Considered to be a tough man with a big heart, he will be missed by all who knew him.
Bert leaves behind to mourn his loving children, Ron (Lynn), Millville, Debbie Miller, North Sydney, Rick (Mary-Ellen), Sydney Mines, Tracey MacMullin, Ft. McMurray, Alta., Stephen, North Sydney, Andrea (Shane) Rudderham, Cold Lake, Alta., and son-in-law George MacMullin, Sydney Mines.
He is also survived by his precious grandchildren. Chris Ivey (Tara), who he referred to as his fourth son, Marisa Tobin (Michael), Brianna MacMullin, Carly and Haley Ivey, Erin and Jillian Ivey, Brandon Lettice, Deidre Ivey and great-grandchildren, Joshua and Jeremy Ivey.
Also his sister, Jean (Harvey) MacArthur, who he adored; brother Ronnie (Claudia) Ivey; sisters-in-law, Jean Ivey, Eileen (Malcolm) MacIntyre, Iris (Lloyd ) Gaudet and Ann (Fred) Morris; brothers-in-law, Blair Young and Urbin (Brenda) Young. Bert is also survived by over 50 nieces and nephews, who he loved dearly and many friends, especially Claressa Confiant.
Besides his parents, Bert was predeceased by his beloved wife of 47 years, Carmelita (Young) Ivey, sister Valda Nugent, brothers, Ralph, Jim and George, son-in-law Len Miller, sisters-in-law, Betty Ivey and Dorothy Young and brothers-in-law, Arlie Young and Paul Perry.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bert’s life will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Thomas John officiating. The burial will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will take place in the parish hall, following the service.
