Georgina 'Boo' MacKenzie
Born In: Glace Bay
Passed on: June 17th, 2014
It is with profound grief that the family announces the passing of a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Georgina 'Boo' MacKenzie succumbed to cancer at home on Tuesday, June 17, 2914.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Joey and Kay (McMullin) Bryden.
After a brief stay in Ontario, Boo returned to Cape Breton and lived the remainder of her life in Reserve Mines. In 1970 she married her lover and constant companion Kenny MacKenzie. Together they raised three of the best kids a couple could wish for; Wade, Kathy and Todd.
Boo was a friend to everyone and served her community in various capacities. She was a long time member of the Reserve Mines Volunteer Fire Department’s ladies auxiliary, serving as president for many terms; she belonged to the St. Joseph’s dart and bowling leagues where at times she was the main attraction because of her fun loving, outgoing personality. She was a member of Gordon United Church in Reserve Mines, having been married there and her children were baptized at this church.
Boo loved children and babies, there wasn’t a baby girl who wasn’t “just beautiful” or a baby boy who wasn’t “Ah. He’s right nice”
Her home was made available to her three children’s friends and became the “drop in” and “stopover” before they continued on to their Friday night parties. She was affectionately know by all the kids as “Ma Boo”
She made the best spaghetti and meatballs anyone could eat and her pork loin roasts and gravy were unmatched. She enjoyed her bingo games at Membertou with sister-in-law, Georgene Penney.
Christmas was a special time on her calendar beginning with the tree hunt in Gabarus, to the Christmas Eve church service and gift exchange to Christmas dinner for 16-18 of us. She spent many relaxing summers at the Whale Cove Cottages in Margaree and entertained and fed visitors everyday.
Boo is survived by her loving husband, Kenny; children, Wade, Kathy (Darcy) and Todd (Tasha). Her adored and spoiled grandchildren, Christopher MacKenzie (recent graduate from Dalhousie in Chemical Engineering, Boo attended his graduation only three weeks ago, it was her proudest moment), Micaela MacKenzie (Nanny’s princess), Jax MacKenzie (The youngest and most robust), Brett MacKenzie (Miniature Todd); special step-grandson, Cameron Walters and special granddaughter, Paige Marie Fraser.
Also surviving are Boo’s first daughter, Connie and her family who were enroute from British Columbia for a special reunion.
Also left to mourn her passing are brothers, Melvin (Brenda) Bryden, Jimmy (Jenny) Bryden, and Steve Bryden. She leaves behind sister-in-law, Helen Bryden (late Joe), Georgene Penney (Stan), and Ethel Vaters (late Allister) and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to acknowledge four close friends of Boo’s who visited her in the evenings over the last few months; Joan McNeil, Shirley McNeil, Muriel 'Moo' Waterfield (loving cousin), and Helen McNeil. She so enjoyed the evening company and tea. Thanks to niece, Melanie Scott, for her delicious fudge treats, Becky Oliver, a long time friend who was always there with a meal or fresh homemade bread, and niece, Trina, who Boo spent many evenings with on the telephone.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her only sister, Eileen whom she loved so much; brothers, Kevin, Cyril and Joe as well as brother-in-law, Clarence MacKenzie.
We would like to express our profound gratitude to Dr. O’Brien for all of his professional advice and friendship. Extended thanks go out to the Palliative Care Group, The VON, and the County Homemakers.
Visitation will be held on Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service officiated by Rev. David MacLean, assisted by Martha MacDonald will be held Monday at 3 p.m. in Gordon United Church, Reserve Mines followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Reception will be held in the church hall. Georgina will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. on Monday.
Online condolences to the family can be expressed at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
Floral tributes gratefully accepted as Boo adored floral arrangements; donations to a charity of one’s choice would also be appreciated.
