
Ethel Jean Muttart (Linkletter)
The death of Ethel Jean Muttart of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, occurred peacefully on June 19, 2014 at the South Shore Villa, Crapaud, P.E.I., Canada, at the age of 94.
She was born in 1919 in Oak Park, Illinois, U.S.A., a suburb of Chicago, to parents, The Rev. Charles Stewart Linkletter and Enid Pauline (Schurman) Linkletter, both originally from Linkletter Road and Summerside, P.E.I.
After attending the University of Chicago, her father served a charge in Bellflower, Illinois, followed by a family move, including Ethel Jean’s slightly younger brother and only sibling, Charles Ernest Linkletter, to Boulder, Colorado, where her father had accepted a pastorate in this university city. Ethel Jean spent her young life in Boulder, where she attended school from grade one, until being graduated from the University of Colorado in 1941 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, with credentials in teaching.
She was married to the late Wendell King Muttart of Summerside on Aug. 7 of that year, during the Second World War, in the home of her grandparents, Maynard Freeman and Sarah Beattie Schurman, in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada, her family’s ancestral home. The couple made their home in Summerside, later operating "Muttart’s Esso Service Centre" and involved themselves in business and community life. Before returning to work, E.J., as she was affectionately known by friends and colleagues, was a member of the "OKTO Club" of the Prince County Hospital as well as the "Y’s Menettes" of the Summerside YMCA.
In midlife, after her husband lost his sight, Ethel Jean completed her Bachelor of Education Degree at the University of Prince Edward Island and filled the position of Social Worker with the Prince County Family Services Bureau, then teacher, librarian, and student guidance counsellor at the Summerside Intermediate School, until her retirement in 1985.
Ethel Jean was predeceased by her husband, Wendell Muttart, and her brother, Charles Linkletter.
She is survived by three children: Hillard Graydon Muttart (Kay Andrews), Summerside, P.E.I.; Helen Pauline Miles, Cornwall, P.E.I.; Charles Stewart Muttart (Georgia, deceased), La Mesa, California, U.S.A. Ethel Jean’s grandchildren are: Hillard’s son: Robert Graydon Muttart (Michelle), Radford, VA; Pauline’s children: Sarah Payne (Dr. Michael), London, Ontario; Paul Miles (Sarah), Hong Kong. Great-grandchildren are: Christian and Nathanial Graydon Muttart, Freya and William Payne, Jackson Miles. Ethel Jean is also survived by her loving sister-in-law, Marilynn (Johnson) Linkletter, wife of her brother, Charles Linkletter, and their children who are her nephews and nieces: Scott Linkletter (Margaret), Charlottetown, P.E.I.; her close and ever- caring niece and faithful visitor, Susan Linkletter (Frank Hennessey), Charlottetown; grandnephew, Lucas Linkletter, New London; grandniece, Lindsay Linkletter (Scott MacDonald), and their children, Maren and Calum, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Nieces and nephews from the Muttart side of the family are: Helen (Horne) Nugent; Lee Horne (Chris); David Muttart (Mary Lou); Peter Muttart (Janet); and Enid Chandler (Arthur, deceased).
Recently predeceased by niece and close special friend, Janet (Horne) MacBeath (Bruce). There are numerous cousins on all lines of the Linkletter, Schurman, Estey and MacDonald families, the older generations mostly deceased, but with many of these related persons living in P.E.I. with a few settled in other locations.
Ethel Jean has resided at the South Shore Villa in Crapaud, P.E.I., for several years where she has appreciated the staff and it’s proficient, kind and friendly care as well as the thoughtful, caring and pleasant visits of nieces and nephews of all ages and the care and concern of many friendly visitors.
Resting at the Moase Funeral Home, Summerside, where a private family service will be held. No visiting hours by request. Interment will be in Peoples Cemetery, Summerside.
No flowers, please.
