Shirley Doone

DOONE, SHIRLEY - Shirley M. Doone passed away peacefully on Monday, June 23, 2014, at the Saint John Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Born in Blacks Harbour, NB on December 29th, 1920 she was the daughter of the late Senator J.J Hayes Doone and Maude Muriel (Logan) of Blacks Harbour, NB. She was extremely skilled at needle point and knitting. Many hands were warm as a result of Shirley’s works. Shirley was a Sunday school teacher in Blacks Harbour, attended Mount Carmel Academy where she graduated from in 1938. Shirley then entered the convent but had to leave upon the untimely death of her mother to assist her father with the children at home. She was the eldest of 10 siblings and many of her nieces and nephews thought of her as a Grandmother. Shirley moved to Saint John in 1965 and became a West Sider, loved and remembered as “Aunt Shirley” to the neighbourhood kids. She was a member of the CWL, TOPS, and in recent years the Seniors Outreach Program at the Loch Lomond Villa. She gave to every charity that required support. Shirley will be long remembered for her sense of humor, long conversations and great stories. She will be desperately missed by many. Shirley is survived by her sisters; Eileen Rothernel, Elizabeth “Betty” Ready, Jean Quill (Kenneth), Sheila LeBlanc (Richard) and Doonie Woodcock and will be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brothers; Allan, Hayes, infant brother Joseph; one sister Lorna MacGillivray; brothers-in-law William Rothernel, James MacGillivray, James Ready and Lenard Woodcock; sister-in-law, Mildred Doone; great-niece Robyn Langis and great-great-nephew Max Rothernel.
Resting at Castle “Fallsview” Funeral Home 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John, E2M 2L3 NB on Friday, June 27th, from 2:00 to 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Assumption Roman Catholic Church at 10:00 am, on Saturday, June 28th, 2014. Interment will take place in Stella Marie Cemetery, Blacks Harbor. In Lieu of flowers donations made to the Assumption Building Fund, The Saint John Regional Hospital Palliative Care, The Ontario Federation of Cerebral Palsy or to the charity of the donor’s choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
