It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, Joseph Owen Jenkins, 67, resident of Rankin Street, Little Bras d’Or, on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Joe was born in Sydney Mines, a son of the late Walter and Louisa (Viva) Jenkins of Sydney Mines.
He retired from the car department of CN Rail, where he worked as CAW union president for many years. We the family know by name all of his co-workers and have heard many of their stories, as he always talked so fondly of his days at CN. One co-worker described Joe as their ‘morale booster.
Joe was a big fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he enjoyed working in his vegetable garden, a good game of cards and made many friends over the years. But his greatest love was for his family and spending precious time with his grandchildren and thrived on the accomplishments of his four sons.
Left to grieve his loss is his wife of 42 years, Betty (Conway) Jenkins; his four sons, Shawn, Fort McMurray, Derek (Tammy), Calgary, Mark (Nicole), Georges River, Tony (Andrea), Halifax. ‘Poppy Joe’ will live on in the hearts of his grandchildren, Ryan, Amanda, Braydon, Brooklyn, Ty, Rowan, Reese and Callie and his great-grandson, Jake. Joe is survived by brothers, Nick (Mary) Viva, Victor (Judy) Jenkins, Sydney Mines, Paul (Jean) Jenkins, North Sydney; sisters, Dominica ‘Sis’ (Carl) MacIntyre and Donna (Joe) Mitchell, both of New Hampshire, Ann Marie (Harvey) Clarkson, California, Viva (Greg) McInnis, Louise (Francis) MacKinnon, Priscilla ‘Perky’ (Roy) Young, Rose Jenkins, all of Sydney Mines, Deborah (Fred) Tobin, Millville, Shirley (Wayne) Adams, Mary (Barry) McNeil, both of Halifax and by many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers, Walter (Skippy) and Louie Jenkins, both of Sydney Mines, by two brothers in infancy, two nephews, Steven Jenkins and Aaron Tobin.
Visitation for Joe will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating. Burial to take place in the parish cemetery at a later date.
