Passed in: Nova Scotia, Canada

Day (nee Hanway), Barbara Ann
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara (Hanway) Day on January 17, 2010 at Williams Country Home in Hilden, Nova Scotia after a battle with cancer. Born in Truro, NS on December 27, 1931, Barbara was the only child of the late Arthur and Kathleen (Mahoney) Hanway. After spending her early years in Truro, Barbara moved to Halifax where she worked for the Department of National Defence until her retirement. During this time, she married her husband, Gerald A. Day, R.C.N. They were able to enjoy but a few short years together before Gerald died suddenly of a heart attack. Following her retirement, Barbara moved back to the family home in Truro where she resided until an unfortunate fall in 2008 rendered her unable to live on her own.
Barbara is survived by her many cousins and their spouses and families across Canada and the United States. She will be remembered for her generosity and kindness toward others and for her commitment to her parents and her late Aunt Angel. Visitation will be at Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, on Sunday, February 21, 2010 between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Prayers will be lead by Deacon Brian Smith 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home on that date and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 669 Prince St., Truro, on Monday, February 22, 2010, at 10:00 am with Father Dariusz Miskowicz officiating. There will be a reception after the Mass at the parish hall where family and friends may wish to exchange their reminiscences of Barbara. Interment is to follow at a later date in the parish cemetery on Robie Street in Truro. Very special thanks are extended to Carmen Payson and staff at William’s Country Home for their compassionate care of Barbara during her time there. If friends so wish, donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to Immaculate Conception Church or a charity of your choice.
