Dr. Norman Smith
SMITH, DR. NORMAN - It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Norman Smith at the Lakeshore General Hospital in Montreal on August 26, 2014. Norman was born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, attended UNB and served during WWII in Halifax and Newfoundland. It was during his service that he met the love of his life, Dorothy Hart. After the war, they moved to Montreal, where he attended McGill University and obtained his PhD in Mathematics. While raising his family, he played the organ at McGill’s Divinity Chapel, and began his long teaching career at Sir George Williams University. For many years, he was the Chairman of the Mathematics Department, both at SGWU and at the newly formed Concordia University. He was a voracious reader, an avid gardener, a professor, mathematician, musician, skier, curler, lawn bowler, and expert mechanic/handyman. He is predeceased by his wife Dorothy of 62 years and mourned by his children Steve (Ella Blais), Kathryn (Paul Philion), grandchildren Karen Smith, Robert, Marc and Daniel Philion, sister Grace (Jean-Paul Dorais), great-granddaughter, Chloe Hughes, niece Linda Alexander (Jean Laroche), and nephew Donald Smith. He will be deeply missed by many other friends, colleagues and relatives across the country.
Special thanks to all his wonderful neighbours in Pointe Claire for their friendship and support.
To celebrate Norm’s life, the family will host a reception at the Pointe Claire Curling Club, on Saturday, Sept 13 from 2 to 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Sun Youth or the charity of your choice.
