It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Michael Joseph Hawrylak, age 79, our dear husband, father, brother, brother-in-law, and friend on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014 in the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Whitney Pier, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anne (Black) Hawrylak.
He was a devoted husband and father, always placing family first.
Mike is survived by his wife of 48 years, Colleen (MacKinnon) and his two sons, Brian (Jennifer), Summerside and Brent, Fredericton. Also surviving are sisters, Rose, Sr. Margaret, CND, and Sr. Elaine, CND; brothers, Gregory, John and Joe; and many nieces and nephews. Mike was also a treasured member of the MacKinnon family and will be greatly missed.
Mike is now reunited with his precious daughter, Michelle, who predeceased him in 1989. Mike was also predeceased by his sister, Katherine and brothers, Bruce (in infancy) and Anthony.
Upon earning his undergraduate degree from St. Dunstan’s University in P.E.I., Mike returned to work in the lab at the Sydney Steel Plant while studying toward his teaching degree from Dalhousie University. He was employed as a science teacher with the Cape Breton Victoria Regional District School Board, retiring in 1994 after teaching at Sheriff Junior High and Holy Angels High School.
As a biology teacher he was thoroughly interested in nature and wildlife which continued years after his retirement from the classroom. Mike served as a former member of the St. Joseph’s parish council. He also enjoyed spending quality time at the family bungalow in Shenacadie and derived much pleasure from striving to be a gentleman farmer.
Mike was an eager Mr. Fix-It, who enjoyed working in his barn with projects he had on the go ranging from small engine repair to wood-working.
Visitation will be held Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated 2:30 p.m. on Friday at St. Joseph’s Church, Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations can be made in his memory to C B Palliative Care Society or to the Regional Hospital Cancer Centre.
