Age 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, at his home in Gainesville, Florida, after a brief illness.
Born May 15, 1921 in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Fred and Lottie (Young) Reid. Bert was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the air force. After the war, Bert completed his university studies with a PhD in chemistry. He worked in the USA as a research chemist for DuPont Hercules and after a long and successful career, retired to Florida with his family.
Bert is survived by his son, Richard 'Rick'; granddaughter, Dakota and great-grandson, Tucker.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Grace (Walker); an infant son, Stephen and brothers, Donnie, Lloyd, Larry (Carole) and Bob; sisters, Gladys (Ferguson) and Charlotte (Erskine).
He is survived by his siblings, Edna (Hilton), Margie (Brian Killen), both of Kitchener, Ont., Marion (MacBurnie), Gordon (Lexie), both of North Sydney, Elaine (Gary Smith) of Cole Harbour and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
Cremation has taken place in Gainesville with a family graveside service to be held in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney, at a later date.
