BARRETT, EDWARD WALSH "NED" - 1924 - 2014 - Edward Barrett at home on September 22, 2014. Beloved husband and soulmate of Honor Rosalie (Gilmour). Devoted brother of the late Bill (Nene), Marita McNulty, Diane Allen, Elizabeth Schinn and Carolyn Daybell (Joe), dear uncle to many nephews, nieces. Son of Daniel and Josephine Barrett of Saint John, N.B. Ned started work in 1939 as office boy at the Telegraph-Journal in Saint John. He quickly became a reporter and then City Editor. In 1948 when family responsibilities allowed, he moved to Montreal and joined the Montreal Herald, starting as desk man, rising to News Editor. In 1957 when The Herald ceased publication he joined The Montreal Star where he worked as Night Editor and then Editor of the Op Ed page till its demise in 1979. In retirement he kept in touch with newspaper friends all over the country via the Internet and as they slowly died, he remarked that his wake could be held in a telephone booth. He became a constant writer of letters to the editor, writing on subjects ranging from politics to the price of a loaf of bread, until his failing sight made it too difficult. He retained an interest in politics, local and world news. Heartfelt thanks to the CLSC, particularly nurse Celine Lacouture, NOVA and all our wonderful caregivers that helped so much.
The family will receive condolences from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2014 at Mount Royal Funeral Complex, 1297 chemin de la Forêt, Outremont, Qc H2V 2P9, 514-279-6540.
