CLEVELAND, Betty Elaine (Swim) - age 83, born on October 24, 1930 in South Side, Shelburne Co., N.S. she was the daughter of the late Muriel Carolyn (Duncan) and William Jeremiah Swim. Growing up in Brooklyn, Yarmouth Co., NS, she graduated from grade XII and Graduated Commerce of the Yarmouth County Academy. She was employed with the Royal Bank of Canada and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., Big Brothers and Big Sisters. She was an active member of the Yarmouth North Baptist Church, church organist for about 50 years, holding offices for young peoples, CGIT, Explorers. She was also a member of organizations including the Arthritis Society, Canadian Cancer Society, Diabetes Association of Nova Scotia, Canadian Bible Society, CNIB, etc. In her spare time she was a member of Sons of Temperance, Seniors Kickin’ Country Line Dancing, and Brooklyn Seniors. She is survived by daughters, Linda (Rev. Trent) Cleveland-Thompson, Halifax; Judy, Dartmouth; sons, Garth, ALTA; Kenneth (Laura) Cambridge, ON; Hugh (Sarah), Louisville, KY, USA; grandchildren, Jason Cleveland-Thompson, Fredericton, NB; Tristan & Beatrice Cleveland-Thompson, Halifax; Paul Cleveland, ALTA; Curtis, Heather Cleveland, Cambridge, ON; Megan Atwood, ALTA; Kacy, Abigail, Rylie Cleveland, Louisville, KY, USA; sister, Gaile (Allison) Pitman; Brother, Victor Swim, Yarmouth, NS. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Paul Cleveland; and brothers, Verne and Courtney Swim. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. There was no visitation by family request. A funeral service was held Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 11 a.m. from Yarmouth North Baptist Church, Rev. A.D. “Bill” Newell and Rev. Shawn Kehoe officiated. Interment followed in Brooklyn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in memory may be made to the Yarmouth North Baptist Church, Women’s Missionary Society, World Vision, Yarmouth Firefighters Museum or a charity of your choice.
