It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loved one, Sandy MacAdam on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2014 at the Northside General Hospital 2 West.
Born in Sydney, Sandy was the son of the late Steve and Mary (MacDonald) MacAdam of Sydney.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Norma (Jones) MacAdam; children, Stephen (Regina) Rochester, NY and daughter, Lori of Charlottetown, P.E.I. He will be lovingly remembered as “Grampie” by his grandchildren, Jacob, Maggie, Madison, Caleb, Mary Liz and Thomas. He is also survived by his sister, Christine Henderson, California; Sally, Montreal; brothers, Donnie, Windsor, Ont. and Harold, Grand Mere, Que.; also by many cousins, nephews and nieces, especially niece, Charlene Pickles, who always held a special place in our hearts.
Sandy was predeceased by his first wife, Norma MacLeod in 1962; his sister, Kitty Brown of Truro in 1981; brother, Joe of Sydney in 2010; brother-in-law, Calvin Jones of Antigonish in 2007; father and mother-in-law, Norman Jones and Annie Jones MacKenzie.
Sandy was employed by Marine Atlantic for over 40 years, retiring in 1993. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney; serving in various capacities. He was a 3rd degree member of Fr. Wm. Kiely Council 5109; having served as Past Grand Knight; also a 4th degree member of the Fr. Wm. B. MacLeod Assembly.
Following his retirement he faithfully served as chairperson of the North Sydney Food Bank (his second home) for many years; served on the board of directors of the North Sydney Credit Union and also a member of the Bartown Committee. In 2006 he was recognized for Exceptional Volunteer Services and was also a proud recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2013.
Visitation for Sandy will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will take place 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to North Sydney Food Bank, St. Joseph Church Improvement Fund, NS Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice.
