EDWARD JOHN ROACH
Ed slipped away peacefully on October 12, 2014 at Shorncliffe Hospice in Sechelt, BC.
Predeceased by his parents Harry and Ivy, and his wife Jan, Ed is survived by his children Desta (Brian), Tom and Susan (Brian), his grandchildren Kelly, Madeline and Laura, and relatives and friends in Canada and the US.
Ed was born at Vancouver General Hospital on September 15, 1932. The son of Union Steamship Captain Harry Roach, Ed joined the company in 1947, working first as a deckhand, then winchman and later as quartermaster.
He went to McGill University in Montreal and met Jan who would become his wife of 48 years. Upon returning to Vancouver in the 1970's, Ed was drawn back to life at sea and earned his Master Mariner ticket. He was master of many ships on the West Coast and greatly valued the shipmates he worked with over the years.
Ed was a kind, genuine and humble man who was grateful for his family, friends, neighbours, and his beautiful view from Hopkins Landing. He was interested in maritime and family history, enjoyed the NY Times crossword puzzle, generously supported several charities and adored dogs.
Ed respected anyone who was hardworking and took pride in their job. He was especially impressed by, and thankful for, the wonderful care and comfort he received from the dedicated nurses and caregivers at St. Mary's Hospital and Shorncliffe Hospice.
Ed leaves us to join his beloved Jan.
