It is with a sincere sense of loss that we announce the peaceful passing of Robert 'Dick' Smith on the early morning of Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014.
We are certainly saddened by this loss but we reflect with satisfaction on the long and blessed life that Robert enjoyed. Born in New Waterford, N.S. on Nov. 21, 1935, he was the son of the late Christina Whelan and Richard Smith.
Robert enjoyed many experiences in life including fly fishing, horses, and playing cards.
He also spent over 50 years as a volunteer fireman with the Scotchtown Volunteer Fire Dept. Special thanks to all members of the Fire Dept. team for their friendship and support over the past 50 years. Robert spent the majority of his career with Devco starting in the coal mines and eventually progressed to proudly be engineer on the diesel locomotives. Robert has spent the last 20+ years in retirement enjoying his friends, family, and leisure activities.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Dora (Newman); sons, Samuel (Jim), New Victoria, and Myles (Beverly) Mississauga, Ont; daughter Roberta (Francis) Gillis, Glace Bay; brothers, John and David (Elizabeth), both of London, Ont. Robert also loved to spend time with his four grandchildren?, Matthew, Jessica, Hannah and Maddie as well as his special niece Louise and favourite pet, Spencer. He also enjoyed spending time with his brother-in-law Sammy Newman and his wife Jeanie.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Ronald, Joseph and Richard, sisters, Sheila and Christina ‘Dolly’ and sister in-law Margaret.
Cremation has taken place. In following his wishes there will be no visitation. There will be a chapel service held on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, N.S.
