It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Roger peacefully passed away on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, in the An Cala unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Donald John and Ruth (MacLellan) MacDonald, both of Glace Bay.
Roger was a 33 year employee with the Canadian Tire Corp., retiring from a managerial position with their head office in Toronto. Wherever life took Roger his heart always longed for Cape Breton. After his retirement, he and his family moved home, residing where his heart and soul longed to be; out on the Mira overlooking the ocean. He will mainly be remembered for his times spent with his loving family and friends, he was a true family man. Roger also enjoyed golfing, dancing, fishing and he would grasp every opportunity life offered him to have fun and enjoyment. He had a great sense of humor and was a member of the Kinsmen K-40 club.
Roger is survived by his loving wife Sandra (nee Williams); daughter Laura (Norm) St. Jean, Ont.; sons, Brian, Mira and Craig (Denise), Ontario; sisters, Marilyn Bajour, Ontario, Gwen (Lester) Turner, Valda Cook, both of Mira; brothers, Fred (Pat), Ian (Donna), Donald (Hazel), all of Ontario; grandchildren, Amanda, Tyler and Brett St. Jean, Nathan and Nicolas Mac Donald all of Ontario; great-grandchildren, Lea, Jaylen and Kade St. Jean, also all of Ontario. He will also be missed by his numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by daughter Bonnie Lynn, brothers Edwin, Lorne, David, Gary, sister Athlie and a special aunt Olive MacLellan.
Honouring Roger’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 7, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service officiated by Rev. Donald MacDonald will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, in the V.J.McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, Glace Bay.
Memorial donations in Roger’s memory may be made to An Cala or the Cape Breton Cancer Center.
At this time, we, Roger’s family, wish to give very special thanks to Dr. Ellerker, Dr. McGory and their staff, and the caregivers at the Cancer Center and An Cala, for their compassionate care shown to Roger.
