It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anne Cecilia Ryan, formerly Jobes, of Southside Boularderie, who died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Anne was born June 26, 1947, in Boularderie, to the late Hughie Angus Jobes and Flora (MacEachern) Jobes.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Anne devoted much of her life to providing service to others, through both her employment and her volunteer work in the local community. In her younger years she worked at Woolworths, the Castle Court, Donut Queen, and Peking Restaurant in Sydney, while raising three children. She would go on to work for both the Northside Victoria, and later Cape Breton Regional School Board as a library technician. For over 20 years she worked at Thompson Junior High, then Dr. T.L. Sullivan Jr. High and Baddeck Academy, and finally at Glace Bay High School, where she worked until her illness in the spring of this year forced her to take a leave from her position. She cherished her time working in schools, and loved working with both staff and students along the way.
She was a woman of great faith, who served both St. Joachim and the parish of St. Joseph with pride. She served as president of the St. Joachim Parish Council, and served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and lay presider. She also served on the Liturgy Committee of St. Joseph Parish and volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul. She graduated from both UCCB and St. FX with diplomas in religious education. She organized a string of very successful pastoral airs summer gatherings at St. Joachim which she was so proud of, because it provided much needed financial support to the church. She was also co-director of the highly successful play The Prophet, which was presented on Good Friday at St. Joseph Church in Bras d’Or.
She loved reading, spending time with family and friends, and going to the harness races, both in Sydney and at Northside Downs. Mom could pick a longshot with the best of them, and beat the odds herself in the spring by getting out of ICU after being there for sixteen weeks. She always enjoyed a good game of cards, and loved listening to the fiddle, guitar, and singing at family gatherings and dances.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Leo, Southside Boularderie; her son Shane (Sheri), North Sydney; daughters, Laurie, Sydney Mines, and Eleanor, at home; along with her grandchildren, Brandon, Ayden, Nolan and Sam. She is also survived by her former sister-in-law Edie MacInnis, and several nieces and nephews, including Kevin Jobes, who was raised like a brother to her.
Besides her parents, Anne was predeceased by her sisters, Margaret (Joe), Catherine (John), Sadie and Mary Sarah, and brothers, Johnny and George (Ida). She was also predeceased by niece Patricia Jobes, and nephews, George Perktin and Hughie Jobes.
Special thanks to the nursing staff and unit managers of ICU and 4D at the Cape Breton Regional, and the staff of 5 East at the Northside General. Thanks to family Dr. Bill MacDonald and the internists of ICU, especially Dr. Ansari, who consistently provided Mom with terrific care through her difficult journey. Finally, special recognition to John Boudreau and the physio staff at the Cape Breton Regional, who Mom was so fond of and who did so much to improve her quality of life.
Visitation for the late Anne Cecilia Ryan will take place on Monday, Nov. 17, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joachim Church, Southside Boularderie, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating.
Memorial donations can be made in memory of Anne to the Haley Street Adult Services Centre Society, 26 Haley St., North Sydney, where her daughter Eleanor has been a client for many years.
