Passed on: November 27th, 2014

It is with profound sadness that we, the family, announce the unexpected passing due to natural causes, of Burton Guy Read, 58, of Sydney at home on Nov. 27. 2014.
Born in Halifax, Burton grew up in East Bay and Sydney. He was a graduate of Sydney Academy. Burton lived with the challenges of schizophrenia throughout most of his life. In the past number of years with support from family, friends, and a community housing program he was able to thrive and live independently. Burton enjoyed a daily routine of walking in downtown Sydney and visiting friends, especially at Cairdeil Place.
Burton was very close to his mother before her passing and loved going out to dinner with her. The tradition continued with his brother Stephen. Burton enjoyed family gatherings and looked forward to birthdays, Easter, and Christmas, and the gifts and joy they inevitably brought.
Burton was predeceased by his mother, Joan (Harris) and father, Malcolm 'Mack' Read. He is survived by brothers, Stephen (Irene), Marion Bridge; Kenneth (Annette), London, Ont.; Stewart (Trudy), Deer Lake, Nfld.; sister, Janis (Mark) Herlehy, Westport, Ont., uncles, aunts and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a true friend, Glen Muise.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 2 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Chant’s Funeral Home, Alexandra Street in Sydney. Service will be held at Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 10: a.m. at Chant’s Funeral Home chapel. Burial to follow at Albert E. Smith Cemetery, Howie Centre.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the men’s homeless shelter in Sydney or the Schizophrenia Society of Nova Scotia. In honour of Burton’s memory, we ask that you take the time to learn more about mental illnesses.
