With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our loving father, husband and grandfather.
Pat 'Cy' McDonald passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side on Dec. 20, 2014, at the Glace Bay Hospital after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John Joseph 'Jack Cy' and Catherine (Hurley) McDonald.
In earlier years he was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces and served in Korea in the late 1950s. He later went on to become a coal miner working in the mines of Broughton, No. 26 and retiring from Lingan in 1992.
In his healthier years he loved spending time at his summer home in Framboise, were he taught his buddy Royce to hunt and fish. He also loved woodworking, playing cards and if anyone needed a helping hand he was the first one there to do whatever he could for them.
He leaves behind to mourn his devoted wife of 49 years Jean (Mauger); his son who he always called my Buddy, Royce (Rea) Toronto, and his daughter who was always his princess, Patricia (Sheldon) Hillis.
He also leaves behind his “pride and joy”, grandchildren Nicholas, Christopher and Matthew McDonald all of Toronto, his step-grandchildren Chris (Sue) Hillis of Kentville and Bonnie Hillis of Dartmouth. He also leaves behind three step-great-grandchildren Roslyn and Ivan Hillis and Logan Smith. Also a special grand nephew John, who he always lovingly referred to as Cracker Jack. He is also survived by two sisters, Genevieve (John) Lee and Lorraine Abbott; brother-in-law Russell (Marie) Mauger and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents he was also predeceased by his mother and father-in-law Ethel and Andrew Mauger, brothers, Allen Cy (Viola), John Cy (Annie May), sisters, Catherine (Joe) Nicholson, Brenda (Michael 'Skipper') Murphy, Edith (Bernie) McGillivary, Dorothy (Royce) Clarke, and brothers in-law Sonny Abbott and John Mauger.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Pat’s memory maybe made to the Palliative Care Society, VON or charity of choice.
Visitation will be tonight, Dec. 23, from 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service, officiated by Fr. Norman MacPhee will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, in the funeral home chapel, with a reception following. Interment will follow in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
At this time the family would like to send their gratitude to all those who were there for them. First Dr. Ley who was always just a phone call away; the Palliative Care Society, the VON, the nursing staff of 3 west and our family, friends and neighbours who were always there to help us when we needed anything from a drive, to going to an appointment with us, to our driveway being plowed, we can never express how much that meant to us and made our journey a little easier. Thank you.
Online condolences to the McDonald family may be expressed at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
