Donald Smith Beckwith, age 98, of Martin's River, formerly of Hantsport, passed away peacefully at the Fishermans Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, on Sunday, January 4, 2015, with his family by his side. Born in Hants Border, Kings Co., to Ebenezer and Sarah E. (Hutchinson) Beckwith, on September 8, 1916. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Josephine (Schofield), Martin's River; daughter, Ann and pride and joy, his grandsons, Zachary and Ethan Anderson; brother, Lee, Milton Ont.; and sister, Mildred Schofield, Mount Denson; sisters-in-law, Kay, Mable, and Mary Schofield; many nieces and nephews. Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Stanton, Wilfred, Helen Robinson, Ross, Abbie (infancy), John, and Cecil. He was a member of the Western Shore United Baptist Church and Poyntz Lodge #44, A.F & A.M. in Hantsport. Recently he was presented his 65 year service bar, at his home in Martin's River. He owned and operated Don's Motel and Restaurant in Hantsport for 25 years, semi-retiring to Martin's River where after a year he went to work at Scotia Trawler. He was an avid boater, camper and card player. Don learned to play piano at 70, sang solos at church at 85, and took up painting again at 97. Family and friends were always welcome. Special thanks to the VON, Lunenburg County Home Support Services Society, Dr. Martell and the emergency staff of Fishermen's Memorial Hospital for their care and compassion at a difficult time. Poyntz Lodge held a Masonic tribute at 6:30 pm Wednesday, January 7, followed by visitation until 8:30 p.m. at Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home (902-798-2232), 194 King Street, P.O. Box 2218, Windsor, B0N 2T0. Celebration of Life service was 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Hantsport Baptist Church, with Pastor Lic. Joe Green officiating. Interment was in the Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport, followed by a reception at the church hall. Immediate family flowers only.
