Gunter Sann

Passed on: January 5th, 2015

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Gunter Sann announces the peaceful passing of their dear Opa at the age of 92 on January 5, 2015. Born in Frankfurt/Main, Germany in 1922, Gunter came to Canada in 1952 and was a respected businessman in St. John's for over 60 years. He was appointed Honorary Consul for Newfoundland and Labrador in 1962 and was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Grosses Verdienstkreuz am Bande des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland) for his exemplary service. When he retired from this position in 2002, he had been the longest-serving Honorary Consul in the world. Gunter was also a long-time member of the St. John's Rotary Club (Husky Boys), an organization of which he was very proud. He will be lovingly missed by Gisela, his wife of 69 years, his daughters Brigitte Godden and Ingrid Stokes (Paul), and his grandchildren Andrea (Phil Kellett, granddaughter Madeleine) in Toronto, Erika (James Fisher) in Vancouver, Jessica (Simon Wilbee) in Halifax and Kyra (David Tuff) in Fort McMurray. A special thank-you to the staff and physicians of St. Patrick's Mercy Home for the wonderful final care they provided for our Opa. Cremation has taken place, with visitation on Monday, January 12, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Flowers gratefully accepted, or, donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. To send a message of condolence, or sign the memorial guest book please visit www.carnells.com
