Charmian Scott
SCOTT, CHARMIAN ODETTE (nee SANSOM)
Charmian died peacefully in her sleep on 21 January, 2015 in Fredericton, NB.
She was predeceased by her sister Ernestine, and by Bill, her beloved husband of 59 years, whom she met in London on the eve of VE day.
Charmian is survived by her three children, Debbie (Robin), UK, Kevin (Janet), Massachusetts, and Robert (Barbara), Canmore; and by her grandchildren, Alexander, Olivia, Robin, and Jacoba.
As the daughter of an army officer (Lt. General Ernest Sansom), Charmian experienced the military life of frequent moves throughout Canada; a life that was to continue through adulthood. In 1942, at the age of 21, she joined the ranks of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. Before long, Lt. Charmian Sansom was living in London and a member of the BBC Allied Expeditionary Forces Programme. As the female voice on the “Rise and Shine Show” she was immersed in the world of music she loved and, as her many fan letters will attest, she quickly won over countless men in uniform with her lively wit and delightful laugh.
Following Bill’s retirement from the Black Watch in 1965, Charmian embraced life in Fredericton – Theater New Brunswick, the Art Gallery, numerous church groups, and skiing at Crabbe Mountain, as well as supporting Bill in his role with the Maritime Seniors Golf Association – with time left over for frequent trips to Europe and Bermuda.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated and loving staff of Windsor Court Retirement Residence. A memorial service and interment will be held at a later date at Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church, and Forest Hill Cemetery, Fredericton, NB.
