Former Whitney Pier resident Donna (MacCormack) Mitchell passed away on Feb. 1, 2015 at the Lion’s Gate Hospital in Vancouver.
Donna was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Doug MacCormack. She had resided in Vancouver for the past 35 years,
A cancer victim, she leaves behind her grieving husband, Ken; sons, Stephan (Lisa) and Brian and her cherished grandchild, Ella.
She is also survived by nine siblings: sisters, Mary (Frank) Fitzpatrick, Carolyn (Arthur) Donahoe and Elizabeth (Bob) Gillis; brothers, Jim (Dell), Doug (Barbara), Ray (Ann Marie), Wilf (Colleen), Allan (Shirley) and Wendell (Lani).
A kind, thoughtful and compassionate person, she always placed the needs of family and friends before her own. She possessed strong faith and respected all, especially people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds
She kept fit, skating regularly at the community rink and introduced the Cape Breton tradition of wearing racer skates to native Vancouverites.
Just prior to her death, she made two pilgrimages “back home”, the last being in mid-November to attend her mother’s funeral. A highlight of her stay was a visit to the former family home on Dominion Street, thanks to the generosity of the current owner. Forty family members were able to re-live many precious childhood memories. Amidst laughter and tears, this was a fitting occasion for Donna to say her final goodbyes to friends and family and her beloved Cape Breton.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Stephen’s Church, North Vancouver on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m.
