It is with profound sadness that we the family announce the passing of Leonard Darling on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015, at home with his wife, Darlene and his best friend Michael Gouthro by his side following a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Leonard was the eldest child of Isabel (Beaton) and the late John Darling.
Leonard was a very proud and private gentleman who took great pride within his community. He gave freely of his time and was a true friend to many. Leonard loved to spend time at the bungalow in Mabou Coal Mines and go fishing in his special spot. He was an active member with the Knights of Columbus for 40 years. He served for 35 years as a volunteer firefighter with the New Waterford Volunteer Fire Dept., fulfilling the roles of assistant deputy chief and deputy chief which he took great pride in doing. He was employed at the time of his diagnosis as a maintenance technician with Cape Breton Island Housing Authority.
Leonard is survived by his loving wife, Darlene (Hogan), daughter Stephanie (Kristy), Cole Harbour, and his mother Isabel. He is also survived by brothers, Greg (Ardith), Jimmy, Angus, Russell, Johnny (Julia), Stephen 'Ned' (Donna) and David; sisters, Kelly and Tracy, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. Also survived by mother-in-law Pauline Hogan; sisters-in-law, Tarryn Darling, Jenny (Jr.) MacNeil and Alice Hogan; brothers-in-law, Francis Sutherland, Paul Hogan and Joey Hogan. He is also survived by several close friends, Ambrose 'Amby' Coady, Louie Graham and his special, private nurse Laura Lee MacDonald (Randy).
Besides his father, he was predeceased by his sister, Anne, paternal grandparents, James and Anne Darling, paternal grandparents, Angus Hector and Kathleen Beaton.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, from 6-9 p.m. A celebration of Leonard’s life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of Saint Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating followed by a luncheon at the New Waterford Volunteer Fire Dept., Walsh Avenue All are welcome. Burial will be held at a later date.
