David Smith
SMITH, DAVID GRAY
David Gray Smith passed away on March 6th, 2015 following a period of failing health. Born 1924, in Saint John, the eldest son of the late J. Stewart and Alva (Bissett) Smith.
Graduating from Saint John High School in 1942 he joined the Canadian Army. After a basic training he was assigned to the Dental Corps and served at the Ripples POW Internment Camp until his discharge in 1945.
He led an active, varied life and was a man of many talents: Teacher, school principal and administrator, thinker, visionary, graphic artist, printer and publisher, frustrated inventor, piano technician, homesteader, carpenter, builder and craftsman, avid reader and critic, and at the age of 62 (when most people think of retiring) director for 15 years of Saint John Super Steel – a touring 30-member concert steel band. “The quality of life,” he would say, “is more important than the quantity and your life is your own responsibility – not someone else’s.”
Survived by his sons; David, James (Catrin Reulbach), Richard and Robert; three siblings, Joan Levengood of South Africa, John (Ruth) Smith of Oakville, ON and Mary (Jim) Twinem of Courtland, ON; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents, David was predeceased by his wife and best friend Jean (Barratt), infant daughter and three infant sons.
Heartfelt thanks are extended to the staff at Kennebec Manor for the care and attention they have provided over the last few years.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). Per David’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
Donations in memory of David may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
