Frances Dorothy Doane, Truro, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2015, at Parkland Clayton Park where she spent the last several years of her fulfilling life.
She was the daughter of the late Dr. Frank D. Charman and Hattie G. (Flinn) Charman. Dorothy was a home person who loved her family life, community and friends to an extent that is difficult to express in a few brief words. She was active at St. Andrews United Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. During the war years she worked at Camp Debert as a payroll accountant. An avid curler and member of the Truro Curling Club in her younger days, she played in many provincial competitions including the Diamond D. Her enduring favorite was always golf, and following in her father’s footsteps was a member of the Truro Golf club where she played regularly well into her eighties. Bridge club with “the girls” was another favourite weekly event. Summers spent with family at our Spencer’s Point cottage was part of her life that even her late in life Alzheimer’s could not steal from her memory.* Enduring into her late 80’s and 90’s was bittersweet, for having to experience the passing of so many close and lifelong Truro friends caused her great pain. It made her family and surviving friends even more precious.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Arthur Herbert (Peter) Doane, her sister Irma (Roy) Ferguson and her brother Frank (Dode) Charman. She is survived by her children Paul (Nancy) Doane, James (Jean) Doane, Frank (Lolo) Doane, Catherine Doane (Ivor Rothwell), ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Life with our mother allowed (us) her children to have such a well-rounded, loving and fulfilling start in life and we are in her debt forever. We miss her smiling face and happy presence and grieve her passing immensely. A memorial will be held this summer at Spencer’s point, family and friends will be notified.
