Born June 19, 1919 in Grosse Isle, Magdalen Islands, Muriel was the fifth child of Garfield and Alice McPhail.
Following the death of Alice in 1935, Garfield relocated his family to Scotch Hill. During this period of time, Muriel assumed much responsibility for the care of her younger siblings.

Muriel was active in her community as a member of the United Church Women, Ladies Guild, Lyons Brook Garden Club, the Princess Rebekah Lodge, and the Lyons Brook United Church. Everyone enjoyed Muriel's cooking and baking; for many years she worked as a cook at The Mayflower Restaurant, at her own restaurant, The Hillcrest Farm Restaurant, and on the Northumberland Ferries. Muriel took great joy from her grandchildren.
Since 2001, she had been a resident of the Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou. The family would like to thank all those who provided such wonderful care for Muriel both in her own home and at the Shiretown.
