
Robert "Bob" Romkey
ROMKEY, ROBERT "BOB" ISAAC GRANT
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Robert (Bob) Isaac Grant Romkey, 82 at the Moncton City Hospital on March 18, 2015. Born in Crescent Beach, NS, he was the son of the late Grant and Marie (Leslie) Romkey. He will be dearly missed by his soul mate and beloved life partner Doreen Johnson.
Bob is survived by his six children: Tom (Karen) of New Glasgow, NS, Heather (Dennis) Osborne of Crescent Beach, NS, Cheryl (Geoff) Blackbeard, of Moncton, NB, David of Fort St. John, BC, Michael of Crescent Beach, NS, Tracey of Medicine Hat, AB; his nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brothers David (Carol) of Greenwood, NS and Reid (Karen) of Bedford, NS; nieces Beth, Angie and Anissa; nephew Grant; and Doreen’s daughter Kimberly Ward (Craig Sargent) of Cobourg, ON.
He was predeceased by his former wife Betty Marie Publicover Romkey in 2011.
Bob joined the RCAF after high school, serving 10 years in various locations throughout Canada and the US. In civilian life he worked first for the Weather Office, then transitioned to Transport Canada where he retired as Airport Manager, Yarmouth, NS in 1988. In retirement he opened Gateway Glass, a solarium business which he operated in the southwestern part of NS. In the early 1990s Bob moved back to his place of origin where he ran for, and was voted in as a member of the Municipal Council for the District of Lunenburg on which he served for several years.
Bob was an active man with many interests he maintained throughout his life. The gift of a camera at an early age was the beginning of his lifelong passion for photography. He enjoyed listening to various types of music and especially loved to go dancing. Enjoyment of softball in his youth led to his becoming an umpire later in life as well as a coach of women’s softball during the 1970s. As a senior Bob was an advanced computer user who spent many hours online working on various projects and labors-of-love. He was an avid gardener, an accomplished carpenter and an enthusiastic traveller who always looked forward to his next trip. He was a member of various clubs and organizations throughout his life, most recently a member of Moncton’s Air Force Veterans Club.
A Gathering for Sharing of Memories and to celebrate Bob’s life will be held at Fair Haven Funeral Home, 1177 Salisbury Rd, Moncton, NB on March 25 at 3:00 PM.
Donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Friends of the Moncton Hospital or to a charity of one’s choice
Interment will be in Crescent Beach, NS at a later date.
