PACE, Leonard R., Shelburne, passed away in Roseway Hospital on Saturday, March 21, 2015 with wife, Judy Conrad and step-daughter Andrea Saulnier, by his side. Leonard was born in Trenton, Nova Scotia on August 3, 1942, the son of Robie and Anne (Creelman) Pace. After graduation from high school, he went to Acadia University where he also became editor of the Athenian, the university paper. There he caught the journalism bug. He worked at the Chronicle Herald and later became editor of the Sou’wester and the Shelburne Coast Guard. He served two terms as editor of the Coast Guard. During this time he kept a close eye on the regulations being made for the fishing industry and was very vocal concerning these issues. Leonard also loved the woods. He paddled his canoe on long wilderness trips, not as a hunter, but for the simple pleasure of being close to nature. He enjoyed picking berries for his meals and collecting dead wood for his fire. He is survived by wife Judy; step-daughter Andrea (Kendall) Saulnier, their children, Fraser and Megan, Shelburne; son Tony (Yvonne), Taiwan; his first wife and good friend, Trudie (Glennie Amirault), Yarmouth; sisters, Phyllis (Ralph) Chapman, London; Joyce Strothers, Ottawa; Marilyn Rector, Truro; half-brother, Donald Creelman, Trenton. Also surviving are nieces Kristin Rector (Bill Chernin) and daughters, Georgia and Eliza of Halifax; Jackie (Gord) Simone, Ottawa and nephews, Geoff Rector (Denise) and their sons, Gabriel and Isaac, Ottawa; Bruce and Christopher Chapman, London, Ontario. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. No service by request. Donations may be made to the Roseway Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. John Keeler and Ruth Waters R.N, and to the fantastic staff at Roseway Hospital.
