Theresa Hughes

HUGHES, THERESA
October 2, 1916 - March 15, 2015
Theresa Hughes died peacefully in her 99th year, in the company of family at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born in Saint John, NB, she was the daughter of the late William Francis and Melina (Gaudreau) McNamara. Theresa was the wife of the late A. Mullen Hughes.
A natural athlete, helped by her daily 5 mile walk each way to high school, for which she attained perfect attendance, she competed in many sports in her youth but her passion was competitive rifle shooting at which she excelled both provincially and nationally.
While teaching in Saint John, she met her future husband, Mullen with whom she shared 55 wonderful years. Being the wife of an RCMP officer in the 1940’s and 50’s, Theresa had many experiences and challenges, often being an integral part of the detachment. For this she was presented with the Second Man Award by the RCMP in 2013. Because of the transfers, Theresa taught math in many communities throughout New Brunswick.
Theresa is survived by her three children, Carol (Joseph) Hill, Fredericton; Daniel (Elizabeth) and Joanne, Halifax, NS. She had a deep love for and took great pride in the accomplishments of her seven grandchildren. Daniel Hill, Tracey (Brett) Ardiel, Michael (Lindsay Hammond), Stephanie, Katherine, Victoria and Jonathan Hughes. She was delighted by the arrival of her first great-grandchild, Lucy Clementine Hughes. She is also survived by her sister, Irene Brown, several sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers William, Edward, Harold, Daniel and Albert McNamara and sisters Florence Krumenacker and Agnes O’Connor.
A memorial service to celebrate Theresa’s life will be held during the summer, notification to follow.
Donations may be made to any charity.
