It is with gratitude for a long life well-lived that we advise of the death of a beloved member of the Northside Cape Breton community, Edith Cavell (MacLellan) Stewart, in her 99th year, on the morning of March 30, 2015 in the “An Cala” Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, she attended local schools and was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, working tirelessly as a member of the Ladies Aid, Women’s Missionary Society and other activities of the congregation. Her community service included as well the Harbour View Hospital Auxiliary of which she was made a life member in recognition of her contributions and dedication over more than 50 years of service. Well into her 99th year she continued to support favourite community initiatives, including the Sydney Mines Food Bank.
She shared a happy marriage for over 50 years with her miner husband, Donald Hughie, until his death in 1993 at the age of 86. She took great joy in the lives of her two children, a daughter, Donalda (James) Davis now of Seaforth, Ont. and son Ronald, now residing in East Boularderie. She leaves behind grandchildren, Donald (Silvia) Davis, Brenda Davis-Fairclough and Eric Davis.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Leonard Davis.
She is survived by seven great-grandchildren, Haley, Olivia, Amanda, Mitchell, Quinton, Brayden and Jared, all of Ontario.
Her life was marked by her profound commitment to her faith and by the affection and friendships she evoked from others whether in her church family (of many denominations), the friends and colleagues of her children, or the newer friends from Central Court, Parkland Cape Breton, or, during her final days, the caring staff in An Cala. She reserved a special place in her life and affection for the Paramedics of Nova Scotia’s Emergency Health Services system, whose friendships she treasured.
She was especially grateful for the medical and health care rendered to her over the years by Dr. Paul Hickey, more recently by Dr. Andrew Wawer, Dr. Jason Osborne and the Northside Homecare Workers and the spiritual guidance of Rev. Marion Barclay MacKay and Rev. Richie Robinson. She joyed in the friendships and overwhelming kindness of the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame resident in Parkland Cape Breton, in addition to the deep affection she felt for the staff there. Her final days were enriched by the care, kindness and skill of the health professionals in our Palliative Care Unit (An Cala) at the Regional Hospital.
Her funeral will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Sydney Mines. A reception will be held at the church following the service. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church or the Sydney Mines Food Bank Society. Family flowers only, by request.
