Hilda passed away peacefully with her family by her side in the early hours of Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Providence Place Moose Jaw, at the age of 84. Predeceased by her husband Albert Schuett (2003) and by Mel Guild (2011). Loving mother of Karen Anderson, Laurel Kelly (Dave), Mary Hobbins (Maurice), Julie Ramsay (Jim Crossfield), Fay Cockburn, Gail Jorstad (Scott) and Nola Hnatiuk. Cherished grandmother of 17, great-grandmother of 14 and great-great-grandmother of 2. She will be greatly missed by her brother Gary Kiefer (Leonila) and by her sister Theresa Desjardins. She was predeceased by grandchildren Garrett Hobbins and Marlo Kelly, as well as by her infant sisters Elsa and Anna Kiefer, by her brother Karl Kiefer, and by many brothers and sisters-in-law. Hilda was born to Henry and Angelika Kiefer on March 21, 1931 and grew up on the family homestead near Avonlea, SK. She attended the Goodland School near Avonlea. After her formal education, she moved to Lethbridge, AB and worked in a Drapery and Décor Centre for a brief time before moving back home and marrying Albert Schuett in November of 1955. The couple moved to Claybank and began their family, raising 7 daughters. She moved to Moose Jaw in 1980 and with a natural flair for interior decorating and design, began working at Patterson Paint, eventually moving on to Klein’s Paint which later became Jerry’s. It was during this time that she met Mel Guild while he was operating a small shop in the lower level of Klein’s. Mel and Hilda spent nearly 30 years together until Mel’s passing in 2011. Hilda spent many years enjoying road trips and camping, but her most memorable travels were to Expo 67 in Montreal, and 2 trips to Germany. Hilda was a very passionate woman all of her life. She poured her heart into everything, from running the daily business of the family farm, to being a homemaker and caregiver to her daughters and grandchildren, and still found time to happily volunteer within the community. As a devout Roman Catholic, she was very active with the CWL in Claybank, serving for a time as the President and remaining as a lifetime member. Despite her unending commitments, she still found time to tend to her beloved garden, a place of peace and serenity for her. Her Saturday baking tradition was a favourite of the family as she always baked copious amounts to be taken home by her daughters and grandchildren. She never missed sending a card for a birthday or for a special event. When Hilda could no longer care for Mel’s extra health concerns, they relocated to Moose Jaw; Mel to assisted care, Mom to the Bentley. As time went on she required more care and she relocated to Chez Nous and finally to Providence Place. Throughout those years she courageously fought her illness and despite her struggles with failing memory, she always greeted her family and especially her grandchildren with a warm, loving smile. A Prayer Service will be held at Parkview Funeral Chapel on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Claybank, SK on Monday, April 6, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. with Father J.R. Prince presiding. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Claybank. Memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan, 2550 12th Ave, Regina, SK, S4P 3X1, or to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 104-2301 Ave C N, Saskatoon, SK, S7L 5X5, would be appreciated.
