GIBBONS, Evelyn (Connors), RN (1922-2009)– Passed away suddenly in the presence of her loving family at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on Friday, January 23, 2009 in her 87th year.
Beloved wife of the late Timothy Joseph Gibbons, R.N.C. (1954). Predeceased by her parents James and Catherine Connors of Bell Island, brothers Hugh, Jack, Stan and Gerard, sisters Lillian Power, Margaret Kent and son-in-law Wayne Short.
Leaving to mourn children Brian (Beverley), Sandy (Angela), Sheila (Robert Power) Burlington, Ont.; Gerard (Nancy) Halifax, N.S.; and M. Timmie (Wayne) Short. Sadly missed with fond and loved memories, Nannies loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren Christina (John Angelopoulos) and daughter Sophie; Jennifer (Craig Kennedy) and daughter Lauren of Ottawa, Ont; Tim and Sarah Gibbons; Michelle Power, Burlington, Ont.; Heather Power (Sean McDonald) of Burlington, Ont., Tommy and Elizabeth Gibbons of Halifax, N.S.; Jeffery Short (Andrea Anderson), Winnipeg, Man.; Kathy Short (Davis Nickel) and son Liam of Winnipeg, Man.
Evelyn will also be sadly missed by brother George Connors (Eileen) of Halifax, N.S.; sister-in-law Mary Connors, Cambridge, Ont. and Loretta Connors and Helen Connors; brother-in-law George Gibbons (Agnes), St. Vincent’s, SMB; Kevin Gibbons (Alice). She will also be greatly missed by her loving nieces, nephews and a large circle of relatives and friends.
Special thanks for the care and comfort provided by the Doctors and staff of St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital during her last hours with us. Mom never asked for anything of herself except to be with her family, relatives, friends and acquaintances. She had a deep consciousness for the needs of others. This was reflected upon by the many who knew Evelyn during her life. In her later years this shone brightly through the gifts she redirected to many, such as the Gathering Place and her adopted children and families in Africa. Her essence, her inner soul was very recognizable by others through her outward warmth. Her actions of caring, compassion, and deep empathy for the needs of others defined her everlasting spirit. Evelyn Gibbons came into this world with a large circle of relations and friends and left this world a better place by her caring and her touch that nourished many others.
Mom’s final hours were spent watching her favourite passion a game of hockey on television. An avid sports person Evelyn was inducted into the Bell Island Sports Hall of Fame. She was also featured on a number of media programs including one she was very proud to have been a participant at “The Rooms” Women in Sport Pre-Confederation exhibition prepared by the Newfoundland Sports Hall of Fame.
Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Saturday 2to 4 p.m., 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Sunday 2 to 4 p.m., 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian burial service will be held at St. Pius X Church, Smithville Crescent, St. John’s at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 26, 2009. Burial to follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
