WILLIAMS, Urban R. — It is with great sadness that the family of Urban R. Williams of Pouch Cove announces his passing on January 23rd, 2009. He passed peacefully away at the Hoyles Home after a brief illness at the age of 82 years. He leaves to mourn his devoted wife of 55 years, Leonie (nee Wall); six sons: Chris (Barbara), Ogdensburg, New York; Urban (Elizabeth), Pouch Cove; Ken (Jane), Forest, Ont.; Andrew (Michelle), Conception Bay South; Rodger (Suzanne) and Allan (Velia), Stittsville, Ont.; one daughter, Ann Rowsell (Keith), Harrington Harbour, Que.; and a special niece Jennifer Hiscock (Bill), Ottawa; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Urban will be missed by his sisters-in-law Dorothy O’Brien, Patricia O’Keefe and Philomena Coady; brother-in-law Jim Wall (Margie), Riverview, N.B.; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Born in Bay Bulls on August 29th, 1926, Urban was the son of John Urban and Mary Ann (nee Kenny) Williams. He received his education in Bay Bulls, St. Bonaventure College and the University of Toronto. He is predeceased by his infant son Gregory, brothers Sam and Stephen and sisters Kay and Martina. Urban was employed with the Newfoundland Department of Finance for over 40 years and was a successful businessman owning and operating Hilltop Grocery in Torbay from 1965 until 1977. He was an avid sports fisherman and outdoorsman who enjoyed his children’s company in his wilderness adventures. An enthusiastic lumberjack who owned his own sawmill, Urban was a skilled carpenter who built six new homes and renovated several others during his lifetime. Urban was a founding member of the Southern Shore Physical Recreation Association which provided opportunities in sports for youth on the Southern Shore in the 1960’s. He was a big hockey fan — especially of teams from Bay Bulls and the Southern Shore and was active in the sport with his sons. Education and public service were always important to Urban. He was a member of the Gonzaga High School PTA, served on the board of the Diabetes Association and was a very active member of St. Agnes Parish in Pouch Cove. Visitations will be held at Caul’s Funeral Home in Torbay from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, January 24th and Sunday, January 25th. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Agnes Church in Pouch Cove on Monday, January 26th at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Agnes Parish.
