SPURRELL, Dr. Pierce Augustus–Passed peacefully away on Sunday, January 25, 2009, with his family at his side, Dr. Pierce Augustus Spurrell, age 79 years, he was born in Eastport and resided in St. John’s. Predeceased by his eldest daughter Joanne Andrews; his parents Ella Susie (nee Way) and Chesley James Spurrell. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, his loving wife of 56 years, Audrey (nee Dawe); his children: Bill (Gerri) and David (Shirley) of St. John’s, James (Andrea) of Sherwood Park, Alta. and Susan (Dr. David Barnes) of Halifax, N.S.; his loving grandchildren: Kelly and Katheryn Spurrell, Erin Andrews, Stephanie and Heather Barnes, Beth Spurrell; sister Olive Hillerich of Ohio; brother Roland (Peg) of Carbonear; son-in-law Dr. Bruce Andrews of Kitchener, Ont.; also numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. Pierce was educated at Memorial University and then attended Dalhousie Medical School, graduating in 1953. He worked for four years with the Newfoundland Cottage Hospitals, then completed a Fellowship in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Upon returning to Newfoundland he eventually joined practice with the Medical Consultants Group where he remained until his retirement in 2005. He was an Associate Professor of Medicine at Memorial University and served on various national and local medical associations and committees. He was a past President of Bally Hally Golf and Country Club and a former commodore of The Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club. Pierce was a passionate boater who loved sailing the waters of Bonavista Bay and spending quality time with family and friends. He enjoyed the company of his loved ones and good friends at his summer residence in Burnside, Bonavista Bay. Pierce took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, his words, “Be honest in all your dealings. Set your goals high and work hard to achieve them.†Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, January 27th and from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, January 28th. Funeral service on Thursday, January 29th, 2009 at 11 a.m. from the Anglican Cathedral. Private interment to follow.
