
Mary Effie O'Driscoll (English)
Passed peacefully away at the QEII, Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, N.S. on July 4, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Branch, NL, daughter of the late Alex and Bridget (Power) English. Predeceased by her infant son David; she is survived by Don, her devoted husband of 56 years; daughters Karen, Halifax; Sheliagh (Eduardo) Oakville; sons, Mark, Montreal, Robert (Shari), Calgary and grandchildren Katie, Jacob, Nick, Megan, Victoria and Jayden; sisters Hannah English-Smith and Mona Gillespie, St. John's; sisters-in-law Alverna (Bill) Simpson, Winnie Nickerson, Patsy Williams, Ita (Stephen) Carter, brother-in-law Kevin (Rosalind) and a large number of relatives and friends. Effie attended Memorial University and taught for several years in NL. She graduated in English and Philosophy from Mount St. Vincent University and later received her Masters of Continuing Education from Dalhousie, following which she taught English as a second language and volunteered with the Association of New Canadians. Effie was a devoted Roman Catholic and, as a member of her parish, she served as President of the Parish Council as well as on numerous working committees. For Effie, devotion to her family was the priority of her life; she was the quintessential wife, mother and nana. She enjoyed gardening, bridge, cooking, book club, travel and annual visits to Newfoundland. A celebration of her life was held at St. Benedicts Church, Halifax on July 7.
