
John Gerald "Gerry" Smith
The death occurred in Ontario on Thursday, July 2, 2015, of John Gerald “Gerry” Smith, formerly of Summerside; aged 69 years. Gerry was a retired member of the Ontario Provincial Police, with over 30 years of service. He was the son of the late Clifford and Margaret Smith. Survived by his wife Terri Mowat-Smith; sons Craig (Sarah) Smith and Brendan Mowat-Smith; sisters Eleanor Grady, Joanne (Don) Wright, Kathy Montgomery; brother George (Marion) Smith; and brother-in-law Stewart Grady. Predeceased by a brother Bill; sisters Shirley Hurlburt and Margie Grady; and brothers-in-law, Bennie Grady, Murray Hurlburt, and George Montgomery. Gerald was an avid sports person, playing hockey and baseball when he lived in Summerside, where he was sometimes known by the nickname, “Smelt.” After high school, he worked as a sports reporter for The Journal Pioneer, before moving to Toronto, where he joined the OPP – Ontario Provincial Police. Gerald pioneered the Travelling Alone program for women, winning the esteemed Crime Prevention Award. A graveside committal service will be held at Peoples Cemetery, Summerside, on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. Memorial donations to Generation XX would be appreciated.
