It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, Bernie Melvin Baker, on July 16, 2015, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Arthur and Viola (Spanks) Baker.
Bernie was a coal miner for several years. He had a love for his grandchildren that was unmatched and he enjoyed spending time with them. He enjoyed the simpler things in life and loved cars, scratching tickets and doing crossword puzzles.
Bernie is survived by his four daughters, Barbara, Bernadine (Derek), Lilly (Jack), Violet; sons, Bernard (Tracy), Melvin (Wanda), sister Lill (Howard) Harte and brother Bill Baker. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren, Melissa, Chad, Shera, Tyler, Nolan, Madison, Justin, Tyler, Kyle and two great-grandchildren Carter and Alyson.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife Sarah, brothers, Fred and Les and sister Muriel Kearney.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2015 from 2-4 to 7-9 p.m. in the funeral home. A funeral mass to celebrate Bernie’s life will take place on Monday, July 19 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be held in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
