Passed on: July 24th, 2015

New Glasgow - John Alexander Proudfoot, age 99, of Parkland Truro, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully July 24, 2015, in the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born June 6, 1916, in Saltsprings, Pictou County, he was the oldest child of the late Gordon and Margaret (Matheson) Proudfoot. John was one of Pictou County’s most successful businessmen, but his entrepreneurial spirit can be attributed to his roots of growing up on the family farm and all the hard work that came along with it. He joined the Saltsprings Poultry Club (now the 4-H Club) and his love of all things chicken led him to become a lifelong poultryman. John and his brother, Jim, invested in their first incubator when electricity came to the family farm. From that humble beginning grew a large hatchery on Westville Road and, subsequently, Proudfoot Motors Limited and Proudfoots Home Hardware. He was a Past President of the Canadian Hatchery Federation and, for many years, he and Aileen escaped each fall to attend a convention. John was a life member of the Gyro Club of New Glasgow and was instrumental in bringing the annual Gyro Chicken Barbeque to Pictou County. He continued his involvement with 4-H and was honored with a life membership in 2009. John became an avid golfer in his retirement and was a member of the oldest walking foursome in Nova Scotia, golfing until he was 95. John and Aileen enjoyed many summers at the family cottage at Black Point, which was the site of many large and loud family reunions. They also enjoyed many winters in retirement in Florida with their many friends, old and new. Dad was most proud of his children and grandchildren and loved to hear of their latest accomplishments. His great-grandchildren were a source of great enjoyment for him lately. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Aileen (nee Seaman); son, Brock (Jane) of New Glasgow; daughters: Lynn (John) Burgess of Halifax; Sheri of Calgary; Marnie (Howie) Anderson of New Glasgow; Anne of Halifax and Mary (Ronnie) Jones of New Glasgow; 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sister, Helen (Ron) Young of Toronto; sister-in-law, Flora Deszca; special nephews, Jim and Kendall Proudfoot, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Jim and Fred. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at R.H Porter Funeral Home in New Glasgow on Sunday, July 26 from 5-8 pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 27 at 11am at First Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow, with Rev, Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. Donations in John’s memory may be made to the Saltsprings 4-H Club, c/o 840 Mount Thom Road, Upper Mount Thom, NS, B0K 1P0 or First Presbyterian Church.
