Passed on: August 6th, 2015
It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Silby Barrett, 68, on Aug. 6, 2015, at Taigh na Mara Nursing Home, where he has been a resident since last September.
Born in Glace Bay, Sept. 28, 1946, he was the son of the late Oliver and Melvie (Wilkinson) Barrett.
At a young age dad decided to leave Glace Bay and venture to Ontario; that is where he met and married our mother. He worked there as a foreman for Shultz’s Concrete Pipe but he knew fishing was in his heart, so after seven years he returned back to Glace Bay with his new family and fished right up until the time of his illness in 1998.
Silby is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sharron (nee Harrington); his daughters, Cindy (Ronnie), Gloria (Derek), Anita (Tommy) all of Glace Bay, Brianna, at home and sons Silby Jr. (Lynn), Donkin and Tom, Glace Bay.
He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, Colin, Nicole, Emma, R.J., Megan, Nicholas, Kolby, Courtney, Kelsie, Cody, Thomas, Katie, and one great-grandchild, Laurie Brett. Dad is also survived by his sisters, Olive, Yvonne, Emily, Sylvia, and Mary, all of Glace Bay, Eunice of England and Debbie of Toronto; brothers, Harry, Saskatchewan and Jimmy, Windsor and many nieces and nephews. Dad is also survived by his mother-in-law, Margaret Harrington, Waterloo; brother-in-law, Tom Harrington, Waterloo and sister-in-law, Shirley Harrington, Kincardine.
Besides Silby’s parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Shirley Cooper and his father-in-law, Theodore Harrington.
At this time the family would like to thank the staff of New Waterford Heights, the staff of Taigh na Mara and Dr. MacLean for their exceptional care for our father.
Visitation will be held Aug. 10, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, with the service on Aug. 11, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Pattern Funeral Chapel.
