With heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Veronica Mabel Hickey, age 78, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt on Monday, Aug. 31, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in North Sydney on Dec. 23, 1936, Mabel was the daughter of the late Robert and Annie (O’Handley) Tobin. She was a faithful member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. Mom loved walking and skating but most of all loved being with her family, spending time with her children and grandchildren. Mabel was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her loving children, Michael Hickey (Tracy), Halifax, Wendy Hickey (Eric), Fredericton, Trudy (Paul) Boudreau, Iowa and Joe (Bernadette) Hickey, Sydney; her grandchildren, Patrick, Evan, Kailynn, Joey, Cole and one great-grandchild, Freya. She is also survived by special nephews, Dougie Rose and Bobby Aylward and many other nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mabel was predeceased by her husband of 59 years Donald Hickey; her brothers, Gordon, Earl, Stan and Michael Tobin; sisters, Irene Rose and Gwendolyn Bobbitt.
Visitation for Mabel will be held from 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. A private burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton, the Canadian Cancer Society or the War Amps of Canada.
