Kathryn (Kay) Hagen

Passed in: Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: August 7th, 2015

HAGEN, Kathryn (Kay) Ellen, age 93, died peacefully August 7, 2015 at Yarmouth Regional Hospital after a brief illness. She was the daughter of Jeanette Hilton-Woods and Lloyd Baker. She grew up in Sand Beach, Yarmouth County attending the one room school there and graduated from Yarmouth High School just before the Second World War started. Her first work was as a hair dresser. Later Lester Pink hired her for work at his Vanguard operations. Her favourite job was at Marjory’s Yarn and Craft where her outgoing personality found effective expression. In 1960, she became owner of the family home of both her great grandfather (Ezekiel Baker / Asenath Nickerson) and her grandfather (Henry Baker / Elizbeth Poole) in Sand Beach. It was locally known as Baker’s Laundry, a business run there in the age of sailing ships and into the 1900's. She took great pride in her immaculately kept 1824 built Greek Revival style home. “ I was always the outdoors type” she said working on her property into her 80's. She was an admirably independent woman. She could often be seen in Sand Beach keeping up the yards and flowers or on walks each afternoon or evening to the sea on the Bunker Island Road. Kay’s attractive looks and vivacious nature attracted a soldier from Caledonia during the war, when he was introduced to her by her brother Harold. They were lost to each other after the war until their 80's when he knocked on her door and she had a late in life friend, with travels to Halifax. His passing after 7 warm years left her with a hard to fill void. She also missed her great friend Ruth (Earl) Horton who was always up for going for an afternoon drive as long as Tusket Falls was included. They were closely bonded, as mothers, by a similar loss. Kay lost her daughter Blithen at age 20 in a car accident coming home for Christmas from Acadia University. They are now together again in Town Point Cemetery. Sweeney’s Funeral Home carried out Kay’s final wishes. Besides her parents, Kay was predeceased by husband Harold (Timmy) Hagen and brothers Earl, Lloyd, Yorke and Harold and sisters Mary, Hope, Helen and Fran. She was the last of her family. She is survived by nieces Pat Tedford and Beth Joudry and nephews Charles and George Trask and David Mahoney. On line condolence can be made at sweeneysfh@eastlink.ca
