It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Richard Baxter, on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines on May 28, 1938, he was the oldest child of the late William and Elizabeth (Foster) Baxter. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Many friendships were made through his walking regime; 6-10 miles a day, every day. He also enjoyed hunting with friends Jack, Harold, John, Mike and Mugsy. He loved his second home at “The Lake”, where he sold worms to the fishermen there. In his early years, Richard spent 42 years working for DEVCO, until his retirement in 1995.
The first weekend in August every year at "The Lake" was always the “Family Weekend”, where all family, on both sides, were always invited.
Richard leaves behind to mourn his wife of 56 years, Stella; daughter, Donna (James), and their children Jamie, Ian and Brandon; son, Ricky and his daughter Brittany; son, Brian (Carrie-Lyn) and their daughter Shaelyn, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Richard was predeceased by his daughter, Diane; sister, Marion (Baxter) MacDonald, and brother, Tommy Baxter.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, Sept. 14, 2015, at 10 a.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating. The burial will be in the parish cemetery.
