The finger of God touched her and she slept.
On Sept. 14, 2015, Mary Aucoin passed away peacefully to her eternal reward after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born March 28, 1931, in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Theresa (Mullins) MacPhee.
She attended Saint Agnes School and graduated from Grade 12 at Central. She attended Provincial Normal College and commenced teaching in 1950. Her entire 35 year career was spent at St. Agnes Elementary where she was a mother figure, an inspiration and guiding light to her young students. Prior to her retirement, she was acting principal at St. Agnes Primary School.
In 1954, she married Ernest Aucoin of Cheticamp and is survived by her six children, Frances (Clifford Aucoin), Michelle (Frances Pryde), David (Anita), Monica (Linda), Douglas (Mabel), Greg (Annette). Also surviving are grandchildren, Robert, Brian, Jason (Kim), Amanda, Jennifer (Adi), Michael Fox (Catherine), Deborah Fox MacDonald (Almon); great-grandchildren, Ava Fox, Jack and Abigail Aucoin; sisters, Cecilia MacEachern, Frances MacMullin; brother, George (Margaret); many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Ernest; brothers, Charles Bernard, in infancy, and Greg.
Mary was very active in her church; a lector for many years, a member of the Junior Altar Society and recently received her 50 year pin as an active member of the CWL. She was a past member of the NSTU, as well as one of the founding members of the New Waterford Local Retired Teachers. She was also an active member of the RTO.
Mary enjoyed her Aging Gracefully friends and meetings as well as her Living With Cancer gatherings, where she made many new friends. She was always anxious for a great game of 45s or 200 and for many years enjoyed bowling. Mary enjoyed all her summer vacations with her in-laws and many friends in Cheticamp.
Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 17, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Friday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m.. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Victoria Mines, with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard's Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
Family flowers only. Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
