With heartfelt sadness we announce James Alexander Ferguson, age 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by family in the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Sept. 16, 2015.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John Hugh and Ella (Lahey) Ferguson.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be forever remembered for his cooking and gentle presence.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Pauline (Poirier) Ferguson; his children, Jim (Jean) Ferguson, Glace Bay and Francine (Joe) Churney, Glace Bay; his five grandchildren, Shane (Kerri) Ferguson, Erin (Greg) Arsenault, Chris (Marilyn) Churney, Karolyn (Travis) Humphrey, Brian (Shauna) Churney and nine great-grandchildren, Taylor, Sarah, Stephen, Nathaniel, Meredith, Jacob, Ava, Levi and Mason. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, John, Mary, Agnes, Theresa and Margie.
Jim served in the Canadian Armed Forces in Ontario and Europe. He was also a member of John Bernard Croak Branch 3 of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Knights of Columbus in Glace Bay. He retired from the Canadian Coast Guard where he worked as a chef. Along with his wife Pauline, he operated Ferguson’s Dairy in Passchendaele for over 30 years.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Curry's Glace Bay Funeral Home, 775 Main St. A funeral service for Jim will be held on Monday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m. at Curry's Glace Bay Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Leo Boone.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
