Alex Hickey Sr.

Alex Hickey Sr.

Born: April 25th, 1927

Passed on: August 26th, 2015

Who was born on April 25th, 1927, ever proud to say he was from St. Jacques, died during the early hours of August 26th 2015. He spent his last two months in the place he and his wife Mary (deceased) loved and raised eight children of their own and where they welcomed others as theirs too. With his mind "as sharp as a tack" to the end, he calmly assessed his options when confronted with kidney failure and determined eighty eight years to be enough. Fortunately, for him and them, his children and most of his grandchildren were able to gather and surround him with their love and support as his final hours ticked by. Alex retired in 1987 from a successful career with the Department of Transportation where he oversaw and managed modernization of the Belleoram- Pool's Cove-Coomb's Cove road system. Prior to that he worked construction building vocational training schools in Stephenville, Placentia and Bell Island. In his early adult years he fished on schooners out of Nova Scotia, worked as truck driver for Petites in Mose Ambrose and spent time in the construction of military bases in Gander and Argentia. He was a man of lived knowledge of the local history, people, geography, and of course, the waters of Fortune Bay. This combined with his quick wit, and pensive nature towards complex challenges made for many fascinating stories and conversations with friends and family. From his house he had a commanding view of the harbour entrance to the south and the picturesque reflection of Bottle Hill to the west. Visitors to his kitchen would find him sitting at the end of the table, a welcoming smile on his face, a devilish twinkle in his eye and an open hand reaching towards them. St. Mary's Bay, became a second home after marriage. The extensive Corcoran family along with many friends held a very special place in his heart and Coote's Pond a repeated place of comfort to visit since the death of his wife Mary Frances Corcoran in 1997. Missing his massive bear hugs are his children, their partners, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and all those who moved in his circle. Predeceased by his parents George (1970) and Dorothy (1982) Hickey, brother's Fred (2008), Pat (2011), sister's Mary (2006) and Olive (2012), grandson Kyle (2008) and son-in-law Jim Vallis (2008). He leaves behind children Alex Hickey (Hazel Lawrence), Shirley Vallis, Gene Hickey (Marylou Stephenson), Norma Hickey (Gerard Penney), Paul Hickey (Estella Keeping), Terry Hickey (Yvonne McDermott), Denise Jackman (Dave Jackman), Christina Cornick (Claude Cornick); grandchildren Tony, David, Meghan, Angela, Mark, Brendan, Carla, Jillian, Niall, Rebecca and Cameron; great-grandchildren Tristan and Kylie; as well as sisters-n-law Kay Corcoran, Jeanette Corcoran, Cecelia (Aiden Bowen) and Patricia Hickey. The world was a better place while he was here.
