Robert Leslie (Les) MacLauchlan, Major, RCAF (Retired)
As the leaves began their colourful turn on a beautiful September 27, 2015 autumn day, Les passed away. He was just shy of his 91st birthday. He was predeceased by his wife Win after a marriage of 60 years and leaves his three children and their families: daughter Debbie Christensen (Ken), grandson Greg (Sarah) and great-grandchildren Morgan and Ty, daughter Carol (Watson) and grandchildren Emma, Keltie, Lauchlan and Duncan, and son Robert (Sherry) and grandchildren Bronwyn, Devyn, Cameron and Jock.
Les was a proud Prince Edward Islander and found joy in his extensive and dedicated P.E.I. family and in making sure the details of the family genealogy were uppermost in everyone’s minds. His brothers and sisters – Walter (Violet), Edith (Gregor), Malcolm (Erma), Gideon (Verna), Beth (Bruce), Alvin (Joyce), Harry (Marjorie), Wanda (Walter), Marguerite (Ken) and Joyce (John) - were so close to his heart. His pride of siblings, children, 54 nieces and nephews, and grandchildren knew no bounds. Always fondly in his mind were his Newfoundland in-laws Mett (Walcot) and Arch (Ruby) and their families.
His wartime naval and career air force years were important to him and reflected his deep love of Canada. He was a committed member of Rideau Park United Church and friends from church and the Alta Vista neighbourhood formed a key part of his life. Always a gentleman, Les was full of quiet surprises, had a wonderfully engaging laugh and demonstrated an inspiring ability to embrace new ideas. He has been deeply loved. Les’ smile, gentle manner, genuine interest in people and sincere caring will be sorely missed.
Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod St., Ottawa, on Wednesday, September 30, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A service celebrating Les’ life will be held at Rideau Park United Church, 2203 Alta Vista Drive, Ottawa, on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at 2 p.m.
Our most sincere thanks and gratitude goes to the magnificent staff at the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre, whose caring has made such a difference to Les and all the family.
A service will be held at St. James United Church, West Covehead, P.E.I., on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 1:30 p.m.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions to the Perley & Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre would be appreciated by the family.
