Velma Helen Astle 86, of Dartmouth, passed away after a short but courageous battle with cancer at Dartmouth General Hospital Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015.
Born in Donkin, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Wallace and Rita (McDonald) Wadden.
Upon her graduation from high school, she left to go to Toronto where she trained as a hairdresser and met the love of her life, Lloyd Astle. They were married in Donkin and returned to Toronto but soon moved back to Donkin where for a number of years they operated a convenience store, hair dressing salon and their sons Lorne and Lynn were born. They then moved to Dartmouth where Lloyd joined the post office and Velma decided to return to school. She graduated from Mount St. Vincent University with a BA and a B.Ed. and joined the Halifax County School Board where she served as a resource teacher until her retirement.
She is survived by her son Lynn (Moon) of Huisomran, Thailand; and her daughter-in-law Theresa Astle; her grandchildren Aaron (Deomaya) Astle, Dartmouth, Patrick (Samantha) Astle, Dartmouth; granddaughters, Sarah Astle, Calgary, and twins Alex and Amber Astle, Huisomran, Thailand, as well as two great-grandsons Ezra and Channing Astle, Dartmouth. She is also survived by seven nieces and nephews as well as many great nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Lloyd, her son Lorne, brothers Renwick and Howard and baby sister Juanita.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 pm and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015 in the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Funeral will take place from Woodlawn United Church 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens with a reception to follow in Atlantic Funeral Home.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of your choice.
A special thanks to the doctors and nurses from the 3rd floor and emergency department of the Dartmouth General Hospital for their exceptional efforts.
