Gerald Neary
Passed on: October 6th, 2015
It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Gerald Neary on October 6, 2015, a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather. Gerald lived his years to the fullest, a life of work, storytelling (a master raconteur), adventure and travel to many places in the world. It began on Bell Island on December 17, 1926, when he was born to Peter and Margaret Neary. As a high school student he was selected as the starting goalie for the only Bell Island hockey team to have won the Herder Memorial Championship. He was the last surviving member of that fabled team. For his athletic skills he was inducted into the Bell Island Sports Hall of Fame. On Bell Island, Gerald worked as a pharmacist and while employed as a physician's assistant, developed quite a reputation for his bone setting skills to injured miners. After the closure of the Bell Island mines, Gerald moved to Labrador City where he worked as an insurance adjuster and a tire inspection specialist with the Iron Ore Company of Canada. Gerald ended his working career after serving 20 years as a director of safety with the provincial government of Newfoundland. Gerald was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Margaret Neary, his first wife Irene; sisters Mary and Margaret; brothers: Steve (Mary), John (Helen) and a stepdaughter, Barbara Fisher (Derek). He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, Winnie, sons: Gerald (Marti) in Ottawa, Ontario, and Bernard; brother Dr. Peter Neary (Hillary) in London, Ontario; sister Anne; stepdaughters: Linda (Bill) in Southern California, Susan (Tony) in Georgetown, Ontario; stepsons: Riv (Cindy) in St. John's and Rod in Tennessee; grandchildren Tammy, Jonathan, Lori, Jennifer, Matthew, Daniel, Tyler, Stefan, Kiel, Travis, Erin, Claire and Kylie will always treasure wonderful memories of him, as will his great-grandchildren Zachary, Sophia, Emma, Max and Nicholas. The family would like to thank Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence and Dr. Crocker for the wonderful care given to Gerald while he lived there for the past five years. Cremation have taken place.
